It is not until recently that doctors and researchers have seriously begun to evaluate a connection between diet and acne. There has always been generous advocacy of the idea that you are what you eat. Now strong evidence is giving credence to what anecdote has suggested all along, that diet is one of the major causes of acne.
A diet high in sugar can lead to an increase in the blood testosterone-regulating insulin (one of the main causes of acne). Eating foods high in cholesterol and fat can also produce toxins and unhealthy hormonal balance in the blood.
Despite the several societal advances and health research in the US and much of Europe, the quality of diet (often termed the Western diet) is amongst the most deplorable in the world. The average American diet is rich in unhealthy fats and BAD carbohydrates. This alimentary lifestyle contributes to the acne epidemic in the US – nearly 95% of teenagers and over 50% of adults under the age of 40 deal with this condition. Could the American diet be one of the causes of acne?
Well, a study by Loren Cordain, PhD, a scientist from Colorado State University, found that amongst a subset of individuals (teens and adults) in New Guinea and remote Paraguay, acne is practically non-existent. These societies sustained themselves with fresh produce, lean meats, and seafood. The diets of both cultures lacked refined foods, the centerpiece of the American diet.
One of the reasons for this difference has to do with the glycemic index, or GI. The GI is a scale that measures the effect a particular food has on insulin levels in the blood. Insulin is a hormone that breaks down sugar and the higher the GI number, the less time it takes for a food to break down in the digestive system.
However, insulin as a hormone also plays a role in the regulation of testosterone. The higher the levels of insulin, the more testosterone is secreted into the blood.
Dairy
The possible role of dairy has as one of the causes of acne cannot be ignored, even by conventional doctors. It is often advise that acne sufferers are to reduce consumption of dairy foods for one of the reason being that dairy foods are difficult to digest. However, Canadian dermatologist F.W. Danby (amongst other researchers) published a study showing that acne may come from hormones already present in milk.
HOW? “But how could milk cause acne? Because drinking milk and consuming dairy products from pregnant cows exposes us to the hormones produced by the cows’ pregnancy, hormones that we were not designed to consume during our teenage and adult years. It is no secret that teenagers’ acne closely parallels hormonal activity…” To read more please click . How? Milk and Acne
Often, cows are milked when they are pregnant. This causes hormones related to pregnancy to appear in the milk, such as progesterone. Progesterone in the body is taken in by oil gland receptors and converted to DHT. DHT is an androgen hormone whose presence can stimulate sebum production.
