What is the Dosage ?
Doxycycline is given in doses ranging from 50 milligrams twice a day to 100 milligrams once or twice a day for 3-6 weeks or until improvement occurs. This acne medication may be taken with food as it makes you less likely to get an upset stomach.
What are the Side Effects ?
Common side effects of this treatment include an upset stomach, skin reaction to sunlight, or unexplained rash. These side effects may require no medical attention but if you experience more serious problems, stop doxycycline acne treatment and notify your healthcare provider immediately. Less than 1 percent of people experience rare side effects such as liver damage, allergic reaction, or vision changes. Stop doxycycline acne treatment and call your doctor if you have any of these serious side effects:
- severe headache, dizziness, blurred vision
- fever, chills, body aches
- severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash
- confusion or weakness
- severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, nausea and vomiting
- loss of appetite, jaundice or
- easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness.
Less serious side effects may include:
- swollen tongue, trouble swallowing
- GI disorder presenting as mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach upset
- white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips
- swelling in rectal or genital area or
- vaginal yeast infection in women acne sufferers.
What should be Avoided while taking Doxycycline?
Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays. Doxycycline can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and sunburn may result. Use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing if you must be out in the sun.
Do not take iron supplements, multivitamins, calcium supplements, antacids, or laxatives within 2 hours before or after taking doxycycline acne medication.
Can other Medications be taken with Doxycycline?
Doxycycline acne treatment is known to interact with other drugs. Medications that are known to interact with doxycycline are antacids, cholestyramine, warfarin, and penicillin. They are known to decrease the assimilation of this acne medication in the GI tract. Some birth control pills do not mix well with this drug and they might not be as effective to prevent conception whilst taking this acne medication.
